Decks Ahead of the Curve
Adventurous homeowners will love the industry’s newest deck products
Stop by the Spruce Grove store in the next few weeks and you’ll see a work in progress as we build a new deck display featuring some of the industry’s latest and most exciting low-maintenance deck products.
If you’ve been thinking about designing a new deck, something that’s guaranteed to bring out your creative side is the ability to curve deck boards. Curved boards are possible because of the composite makeup of modern deck board materials.
Never having built with curved deck boards ourselves, we wanted to know if it was as easy as the manufacturer of this product made it out to be, so we were eager to incorporate them into the design of the new display. We found out quickly that it would take some time, planning and ingenuity to get the job done right. The first challenge we had was to make our own “oven” to heat the boards to the temperature where they could be manipulated into the desired shape. Luckily, our able Home Hardware staff and local contractor were up to the task and I am pleased to report that we achieved the desired results and the curved boards look great.
So far, I’d rate this project more suitable for intermediate to advanced DIY customers and deck building professionals because of some of the risks of dealing with high temperatures (fire, for one). I will keep you posted once the deck is complete.
